Uh!!! Chi si vede... Jazzer!
Interrompo il web-esilio per annunciare che gli "dei" sono tornati!!!

Nuovo album in studio per i Tuxedomoon, il terzo dopo il loro ritorno nel 2004 con Cabin in the sky e il road-album del 2006 Bardo Hotel Soundtrack.

Vapor trails vede all'opera la stessa formazione dei due album precedenti, ovvero il trio "storico" formato da Steven Brown, Blaine L. Reininger e Peter Principle più il trombettista belga Luc van Lieshout, collaboratore di lunga data.

Il disco, registrato ad Atene in uno studio con vista da una parte sull'Acropoli e dall'altra sulla collina di Likavitos esce - sempre per la gloriosa Crammed discs / Joeboy - in due versioni: quella "normale" in CD e in edizione limitata, ovvero un cofanetto intitiolato 77o7 tm che, oltre all'album contiene un CD con brani d'archivio inediti, un DVD con 160 minuti di video rari mai visti e un CD live. Mi pare bene (tanto voi sapete il vostro Jazzer cosa vorrà, vero?)
Sto comunque ascoltando Vapor trails (intanto ho preso la versione "normale" in attesa del cofanetto) e come al solito è come ritrovare dei vecchi amici: puro suono "tuxedo-style" senza tempo, ma impreziosito dalle atmosfere dei vari paesi nei quali vivono i musicisti: il Messico per Brown, la Grecia per Reininger, New York per Principle e il Belgio per van Lieshout, il tutto stemperato in una modernità che non cambia o semplifica l'estetica musicale della band in quello che loro stessi definiscono "post-national style".
Più meditativo e meno estroso di Cabin in the sky, Vapor trail trova i 4 Tuxedomoon in piena forma musicale ed intellettuale e alle prese con una matura riflessione sulla modernità e sulla natura multi-culturale della musica, producendo così un disco che affascina già al primo ascolto e che promette bene anche per i successivi. Grandi, come sempre.

The sessions which produced this (Record? CD? Song Cycle? Downloadable file?) occurred in Athens, Greece in March, September, and finally November 2006. The studio in which we worked had a view of the Acropolis on one side and of Likavitos hill, “the place of wolves” on the other. The hotel in which the band stayed was situated near all of the major features of the Acropolis complex as well as Keramikos, the ancient cemetery situated on the pilgrim road to Elefsina, or Eleusis, site of the Eleusinian mysteries. All around us, and impossible to ignore, was the maddening hurly burly of modern Athens traversed as it is by many thousands of attractive strangers of all persuasions, filled with marvelous food, cantankerous spectacle, and taxi drivers who may or may not be part of the human species.

Who can say to what extent a place or situation enters into the creative process of those artists who sit down to their earnest trance there? Tuxedomoon has been privileged to be able to create in various places around the globe and those places have no doubt affected the resulting music. Perhaps it is our job, our vocation, to travel to places and run their gestalt through a Tuxedomoon filter before presenting them back to you, the listener.

Here then, doctor, are the results of the Greek sojourn. It is my pleasure to present “Vapour Trails”, our latest excursion into the stygian realms of our collective unconscious. As Plato, an eminent local once said “Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue.” Or, as Elvis said “I don't know anything about music. In my line you don't have to.”
